About: Wampum are beads made from polished shells, typically quahog shells (hard-shelled clam) which are plentiful in the waters from Cape Cod south to New York, with a great abundance in Long Island Sound. Traditionally, Native Americans have used these beads in ceremonies, for communication, and as currency. The combination of white and purple represents the duality of the world; light and dark, sun and moon, happiness and grief.
